This role is responsible for accurately locating, marking, and documenting company-owned fiber optic infrastructure to ensure safe excavation and prevent service-affecting damage.
This is a private/in-house locator position, focused on supporting internal crews and approved contractors—not high-volume 811 ticket production.

Key Requirements

  • Locate and mark underground fiber optic cables, conduits, handholes, vaults, and related OSP infrastructure
  • Use electromagnetic, passive, and tracer wire locating equipment to determine accurate fiber paths and depths
  • Interpret OSP prints, as-builts, splice diagrams, and GIS maps
  • Coordinate closely with construction, maintenance, engineering, and project management teams
  • Perform pre-construction walkthroughs and jobsite verifications
  • Identify discrepancies between field conditions and maps; report redlines and corrections
  • Document locate activities with photos, sketches, and field notes
  • Support emergency fiber restoration efforts as needed
  • Assist with damage investigations and root cause documentation
  • Maintain locating equipment and ensure calibration and readiness
  • Follow all safety standards, traffic control requirements, and company policies

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1–3 years of experience locating fiber optic or telecom utilities
  • Strong understanding of underground fiber construction methods (direct buried, duct, conduit systems)
  • Experience using locating equipment (EM locators, sondes, tracer wire techniques)
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber maps, splice prints, and construction drawings
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to work independently and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Strong attention to accuracy, safety, and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with OSP fiber networks (long-haul, metro, or access)
  • Knowledge of handholes, vaults, splice cases, and duct structures
  • Familiarity with GIS systems, mapping software, or mobile field applications
  • Previous experience supporting fiber construction or maintenance crews
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Damage prevention or utility protection training

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain
  • Ability to work in roadside, easement, and active construction environments
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and stand for extended periods
