The Posting

Bolt Graphics is a semiconductor startup based in Sunnyvale, CA building the fastest and most efficient graphics processors. We pride ourselves on our first principles approach to solving problems. We are energized by our mission to reduce the barrier of entry for content creation and consumption. Our goal is to enable everyone to easily create, simulate and consume immersive experiences as vividly as they can imagine them.

Our Values

  • Be Fearless: Unmute yourself. Test boundaries and get proven right.
  • Remain Adaptable: Stay comfortable in a continuously changing world. If you’re wrong, concede and move on.
  • Educate Your Ego: Selflessly collaborate towards our shared purpose.

About the role:

We are seeking a talented and experienced HPC Software Engineer to develop and optimize high-performance computing solutions for complex, computationally intensive applications.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience in HPC environments, such as supercomputing, financial technology (FinTech), national laboratories, or hyperscale computing, with a strong preference for senior-level engineers with 7-10+ years of experience, including Principal Engineers. You must have deep technical expertise in C/C++, parallel computing, and performance engineering with strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills. You should be passionate about solving challenging computational problems and developing high-performance solutions.

What you'll do:

  • Design, develop, and optimize high-performance software using C, C++, Python, and Linux-based development environments.
  • Implement and optimize parallel computing algorithms for modern CPU and GPU architectures.
  • Develop and optimize software by using parallel programming models and hardware acceleration technologies, including OpenMP, CUDA, SIMD, SIMT, AVX, and SVE.
  • Analyze application performance, identify computational bottlenecks, and improve execution speed, memory efficiency, and scalability.
  • Develop and maintain HPC applications supporting computationally intensive workloads, including physics simulations, fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics, and scientific computing.
  • Improve code generation, execution efficiency, and hardware utilization by working at the systems and compiler level.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks and issues in HPC projects.
  • Conduct research and experiments to drive continuous improvement and innovation in HPC architecture.
  • Drive the development and implementation of new HPC features and technologies.
  • Contribute to software architecture, technical design decisions, code reviews, and engineering best practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have strong expertise with HPC software development tools, libraries, and frameworks, including OpenMP, TBB (oneTBB), and CMake.
  • Experience with HPC use cases: physics simulations, fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics.
  • Expert-level proficiency in C, C++, Python, and Linux.
  • Strong understanding of parallel computing concepts, concurrency, multithreading, and performance optimization.
  • Strong applied experience with CPU/GPU computing architectures and optimization techniques, including CUDA, AVX, SIMD, and SIMT.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience developing, profiling, debugging, and optimizing computationally intensive applications.
  • Hands-on experience enabling software on GPUs.
  • Comfortable working across abstraction layers from architecture concepts to implementation and debugging.
  • Ability to work independently on complex engineering problems and collaborate effectively with distributed teams.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate complex mathematical and computational requirements into efficient software solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related field.
  • Senior or Principal level experience preferred: Senior - 7+ years of experience; Principal – 10+ years of experience.
  • Experience with Julia, assembly language, LLVM, compiler infrastructure, or compiler optimization.
  • Experience developing software for supercomputers, large-scale compute clusters, or hyperscale infrastructure.
  • Proven track record of leading complex projects from concept to completion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to mentor engineers, influence technical decisions, and effectively collaborate within cross-functional local and global teams.
  • Background in scientific computing, numerical methods, computational physics, fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics, or large-scale simulations.
  • US Citizen preferred.

Compensation Range: 5+ years of experience: $165,000 - $180,000 per year (California); 7+ years of experience: $180,000 - $250,000; 10+ years of experience: $250,000 - $300,000. This range represents the anticipated base pay for this role based in California; the final offer may vary based on qualifications, experience, and location.

Benefits:

  • Medical, Dental, & Vision - 100% covered premiums
  • Equity - Stock Options
  • 401(k) match
  • WFH Hardware
