The Posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior/Lead Backend Engineer based in the United States.

Join an ambitious, technology-driven energy business working to make energy more abundant, affordable, and accessible. As a Senior/Lead Backend Engineer, you will design and build the core digital infrastructure powering a next-generation energy ecosystem. You will work closely with product teams to develop reliable, scalable backend systems across AI, energy billing, data processing, and power trading. From serving millions of AI prompts daily to building real-time pricing engines and sophisticated settlement systems, your work will address complex engineering challenges with tangible business impact. You will take ownership of systems from architecture and design through deployment and production, with significant autonomy in technical decision-making. This is an opportunity to apply exceptional engineering skills to transform the energy industry through cutting-edge technology and innovative infrastructure.

Accountabilities:

You will own the design, development, and operation of critical backend systems, working across AI infrastructure, energy data, billing, and trading technologies to deliver reliable and scalable solutions.

  • Design, build, and maintain complex backend systems from initial architecture and implementation through production deployment and ongoing optimization.
  • Develop the inference layer supporting AI workloads, serving millions of prompts per day across customer support and meter-reading optical character recognition (OCR).
  • Migrate AI workloads to proprietary GPU infrastructure, improving control over performance, scalability, and computing resources.
  • Build systems that process energy settlement data, supporting continuous recalculation as new information becomes available, even months after energy delivery.
  • Develop and enhance real-time billing infrastructure, including per-customer transaction ordering, idempotency, audit trails, and pricing based on half-hourly meter readings.
  • Build and extend energy trading and hedging systems supporting forward markets, portfolio optimization, and reconciliation with directly accessed exchanges.
  • Ensure backend services meet high standards for availability, reliability, scalability, and data integrity.
  • Collaborate closely with product teams to translate business requirements into effective technical architectures and production-ready solutions.
  • Take ownership of technical decisions, identify system improvements, and deliver complex engineering projects with a high degree of autonomy.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an exceptional software engineer with a proven ability to design and deliver complex, highly available production systems. You should demonstrate strong technical judgment, clear communication, and the ability to take ownership of challenging engineering problems.

  • Demonstrable excellence in software engineering, with strong problem-solving and system design capabilities.
  • At least 3 years of software engineering experience, with expectations adjusted according to the seniority and scope of the position.
  • Proven ability to define, architect, and build complex backend systems.
  • Hands-on experience developing, deploying, and maintaining highly available production systems.
  • Strong understanding of backend architecture, reliability, scalability, and production engineering practices.
  • Ability to work independently, make sound technical decisions, and take ownership of systems throughout their lifecycle.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with product and engineering stakeholders.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, such as AWS CDK, is a plus.
  • Previous experience in the energy sector is advantageous.
  • Experience delivering consumer-facing products is also a plus.

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation: Attractive salary package with eligibility for equity.
  • Biannual bonuses: Additional performance-based bonus opportunities twice a year.
  • Technology allowance: Fully expensed technology and equipment tailored to your needs.
  • Private health insurance: Healthcare coverage, with details varying by location.
  • Meal allowances: Breakfast and dinner allowances for office-based employees.
  • International opportunities: Remote positions available across the United States, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Poland, and France.
  • Meaningful technical impact: The opportunity to build critical infrastructure for a more affordable and efficient energy system.
  • Engineering ownership: Significant autonomy to design, develop, and operate complex systems using modern technologies.
