The Posting

The Company

NorthMark Compute & Cloud (NMC²) is backed by dedicated leadership and investment, with a clear mission as it operates at the bleeding edge of technology. Its goal is to scale and enhance the high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud infrastructure that supports its clients' research, production, and delivery, enabling breakthroughs that shape the industries of tomorrow. Its engineers build critical infrastructure to eliminate friction in scientific research, simulations, analysis, and decision-making, accelerating discovery and driving faster innovation.

The Position

The Mechanical Operations Engineer will support the Mechanical Operations & Power Generation team, which provides owner-side technical leadership for the cooling, water, wastewater, fire protection, environmental, and onsite power-generation systems supporting our High-Performance Compute Center (HPCC) in Spartanburg. This is a developmental position, designed to build the organization’s next Subject Matter Expert (SME).

Rather than following a fixed rotation, the incumbent is assigned each day to the team’s highest-priority need where they can also learn the most, such as an active event, a commissioning or testing activity, a permit deadline, a design review, or a root-cause analysis. This hire will build broad working competency first and deeper ownership as they progress, with the goal of growing into a true Subject Matter Expert within our organization.

This person will report to the Mechanical Operations Manager and work alongside multi-discipline Subject Matter Experts. The role prepares work for each area’s Primary SME; technical decisions, regulatory submittals, and approvals remain with the responsible SME, the Manager, and EHS.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to the team’s highest-priority needs as assigned each day, including active events, commissioning and testing, permit deadlines, design reviews, and root-cause analyses, shifting between systems quickly with minimal notice.
  • Support design, submittal, and drawing reviews and construction observations across white-space and gray-space cooling, fire protection, water and wastewater, environmental, and power-generation interface systems, with attention to operability, maintainability, and accessibility.
  • Support startup, flushing, controls verification, functional and integrated testing, punch-list resolution, turnover, and warranty follow-up.
  • Perform field walkdowns, inspections, data collection, and trending; coordinate sampling and compliance testing; and prepare findings for SME review.
  • Support troubleshooting, failure investigations, and root-cause analyses, including data gathering, timeline development, and corrective-action tracking.
  • Maintain accurate records in the CMMS and help develop SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, maintenance procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Work with contractors, vendors, OEMs, EHS, and other disciplines to gather information and follow actions through to completion.
  • Follow site mechanical safety requirements, including lockout/tagout, confined space, and pressure-boundary controls.
  • Keep a daily log of assignments, systems worked, and lessons learned, and progress through a documented development plan that the Manager reviews at least semi-annually, including a readiness assessment for SME placement.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, environmental, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent technical experience.
  • 2–5 years of experience in mechanical systems, utilities, power generation, industrial or commercial facility operations, construction, or commissioning.
  • Working understanding of mechanical and fluid systems fundamentals, such as pumps, heat exchangers, piping, controls, and water treatment concepts.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, drawings, specifications, and OEM documentation.
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with contractors, vendors, OEMs, and other disciplines.
  • Learning agility and ownership: able to become productive quickly on unfamiliar systems and comfortable with changing priorities and short-notice response.
  • Willingness to work onsite in field and plant environments with required PPE, including during construction, commissioning, and occasional off-hours events, with travel for vendor, OEM, or training events as needed.
  • Preferred: experience in data center, mission-critical, or power-generation environments; commissioning, or turnover experience on large capital projects; familiarity with CMMS platforms, reliability practices, and RCA methods; exposure to air, water, or wastewater compliance and testing; familiarity with liquid cooling, chilled-water plants, fire protection systems, or reciprocating engine or gas turbine generation.
